I find animals to be experts on what is important in life. They know how to live in the moment, how to play, how to love, and how to forgive. They are an accepting bunch and I feel very fortunate to spend my time with them.
In return for their company, I try to get involved. I support many animal welfare organizations, but one in particular touches my heart... "Best Friends" no kill animal sanctuary. You can read more about them on my "Close to my Heart" page.
In 2008 a friend treated me to a seminar in Sebatopol. "Full House Farms" where horses are used to teach leadership, trust and communication. I was so intriqued by the experience that I continued this line of study. The following year I went to Monty Roberts Ranch in Solvang CA. where I studied equine behavior . Monty's "join up" program is a violence free training course. It was such an enlightening experience to work with horses using body language and intention that I wanted to continue to explore this style of training to use in my practice.
Not long after that, a fellow dog walker told me about Trish King, an animal behaviorist. I had read her books ,but was not aware that she was local. When I learned she taught courses at the Marin Humane Society...I signed up!
In 2010 I successfully completed the Marin Humane Society’s "Canine Behavior Academy" 1 and 2 under her instruction. It was a privilege to study with this leader in her field.
I look forward to continuing my education so I may provide the best care possible for my clients and their families. As you can see, Very Important Pets is a labor of love.

ReplyDeleteWinnie is great. She has a new home with two other male dogs that she loves to boss around. She is safe, well fed, exercised and very loved by her new caretakers.
